Case Study County Development Coordinator
Name: Shaun Thomas
Goal: To grow the sport and realise the potential of archers!
Method: Working with local clubs and partners
Why I volunteered…
Before becoming a CDC I had been running after school clubs and have a-go sessions to encourage children and families to try out the sport. The feedback was positive and I noticed a wealth of untapped talent within the pool of archers that took part. When I heard what fellow CDC Roger Crang was achieving in Gloucestershire it inspired me to help Derbyshire!
In my first year…
I’ve been in touch with clubs in Derbyshire to find out what they want and to help facilitate a pathway for them to realise their ambitions. They know that I’m passionate about archery and will commit the time to help it grow. I’ve promoted the ontarget club development scheme, gained agreed support from Derbyshire Sport (County Sport Partnership) and made good relationships with the NGB Forum, schools and the university, county council, local press, the county and regional archery associations and the Archery GB Development Team
Hopes for the future…
The awareness of archery as an easily accessible sport for all will continue to rise. After London 2012, I imagine that there will be:
- Increased exposure of archery in schools, resulting in regular inter-schools competition
- Archery becoming a mainstream sport as part of the curriculum
- Structured talent identification to develop archers at the earliest stage
