Welcome our Rio Heroes Home!

There's only a week to go before the achievements of our Olympic and Paralympic heroes are celebrated by homecoming celebrations in Manchester and London. So what's happening when and how can you join the party?

The official homecoming parade is being held in Manchester on 17 October. Special buses will carry our athletes through the city's streets and more than 200,000 people are expected to flood into the city centre.

Special trains and trams are being laid on and over 5,000 free parking spaces are being made available at different sites to keep the streets as free from traffic as possible.

The parade will start outside the Museum of Science and Industry in Castlefield at 4.30pm and will move on to Deansgate at its junction with Liverpool Road.

It will then carry on through Huntsbank, Todd Street, Corporation Street, Exchange Square and Cross Street before a civic reception outside Manchester's magnificent town hall at Albert Square.

London will celebrate one day later, on 18 October, at Trafalgar Square from 1pm.

Both teams will be introduced to the crowds at the event, which will also feature music performances and big-screen footage of Rio 2016.

Minister for Sport Tracey Crouch said: "The achievements of Team GB and ParalympicsGB made the whole country proud.

"So it is only right that we host fitting celebrations to mark their incredible performances in Rio.

"Our athletes are an inspiration to millions and gave us so many fantastic medal moments that will live long in the memory.

"I know that Manchester - a city with a rich sporting history - and London, with its strong links with the Olympic and Paralympic Games, will host brilliant celebrations.

"It will give the British public a chance to say thank you to our amazing athlete heroes."

Mark England, Team GB's Chef de Mission, paid tribute to the exploits of both teams in our best ever overseas Games.

He said: "This will be a very proud moment for all Team GB and ParalympicsGB athletes and rich reward for such fantastic efforts in Rio.

"We appreciate the invitation from Her Majesty's Government and have no doubt Manchester and London's celebrations will be a fitting tribute and culmination of an incredible couple of months."

Penny Briscoe, Chef de Mission for ParalympicsGB, added: "We have delivered an amazing, awe-inspiring performance in Rio.

"We had the most competitive team at the most competitive Games resulting in second place on the medal table with 147 medals, 64 of those gold.

"We know those performances have excited and energised the public and so it is right and fitting that in both Manchester and London the athletes will receive a welcome from those cities."
