We have added speech enabling software to our web site to help with access for those who find reading difficult. This includes people with dyslexia, learning difficulties, mild visual impairments and those for who English is a second language. To use the software you will need to download the Browsealoud plug-in.
Once you have downloaded the plug-in the Browsealoud icon will appear in the system tray on the bottom right of your computer. The icon looks like a target. Double click on the icon and it will open a dialogue box which will allow you to customise your settings. Amongst other things you can choose from a range of voices and speeds, tell it whether you want it to read just one sentence or to read continuously, choose the colours it uses to show what is being read and whether you want it to open automatically when you start your computer. For more information on what the system can do and how to use the options take the Browsealoud video tour.
You only need to download the plug-in once. You will then be able to use it on any site which has Browsealoud enabled. A complete list of sites using browsealoud is available on the Texthelp website.
