The role of the Disability Committee in archery is to provide links with other organisations both within our Sport and also with other sporting bodies. I hope to continue to work closely with British Wheelchair Archery Association, LimbPower, WheelPower, British Paralympics Association, British Blind Sport, World Archery and any other relevant organisations, who may help, to move our sport forward.
We will work with Performance to further help develop pathways to archers who are interested in Paralympic Archery, and also help and support Coaches and Clubs to encourage any beginners/novices with disabilities who want to participate.
Does your club welcome disabled archers?
The Disability Committee has reviewed Archery GB's Equality Policy and how it affects members with a disability or impairment. If your archery club, organisation or activity can accommodate disabled members then they must have the same opportunities and provision as non-disabled members. We have heard of a number of instances where this principle is not being followed.
Disabled archers should not be subject to extra costs: either directly through extra fees, or indirectly by extra requirements being placed on them to participate. They should have equal opportunities to use the shooting facilities and the same standards of toilets and access as non-disabled archers.
Archery promotes itself as an inclusive sport and our ambition is to grow archery as a sport for disabled people from all impairment groups, whatever their involvement in the sport and we are asking for your support to achieve this. Our goal is that every member should be able to participate at their desired level without prejudice.
We would ask you to review your current practices from the standpoint of equality of opportunity in the areas indicated above and make changes where necessary. There is a good deal of information on the following webpage: http://www.archerygb.org/disability
The English Federation of Disability Sport has an online toolkit called the Inclusion Club Hub. This supports sports clubs to improve provision and opportunities and helps clubs to include more disabled people in their activities. Have a look here - http://www.inclusion-club-hub.co.uk/
