In 2009 Berkshire Archery awarded him the Mary Dolan Trophy for his outstanding services to archery in the county, and his work with the sport over many years.
John was also an author - his book "Archery Today" was published in 1988.
David Harrison, Chairman of Archery GB, said: "This is very sad news. John was an archery stalwart for many, many years, and his passing is a great loss, not only to his family, but to his many friends in the archery community.
"John was highly regarded as a judge, and a coach, not just in this country, but by people who worked with him at shoots all over the world.
"He put in an enormous amount of work at all levels of the sport, dedicated to helping others get the maximum enjoyment and sense of achievement from archery. Our deepest sympathies go to his family and his many archery friends."
