My older son, Richard, and I are both archers, he with Edinburgh University where he is studying for his doctorate, and me with Killingworth Archers in Newcastle upon Tyne. We went to see the ladies team finals at Lord's Cricket Ground, accompanied by my partner, Muriel, and her brother-in-law, Andy. Sadly GB had already been eliminated when our session started but we got to see the best female archers in the world shoot amazing scores under difficult conditions. We also got drenched a number of times and steamed dry in the sun!
Predictably, the South Korean trio won for the seventh consecutive Olympics but only by the one point this time.
As I am studying to be an archery judge, I was as interested in the administration as the participation. The crowd was enthusiastic and seemed to comprise about 25 per cent South Koreans. The atmosphere was very friendly, chatty and damp. I met archers from near (the Home Counties) and far (Malaysia). I am so glad I went.
